A History of Faith

In 1975, Faith Missionary Baptist Church was begun by Missionary Ralph Cunningham with the endorsement of Faith Baptist Church of North Little Rock, Arkansas. The first service was held on January 15, 1975 with 36 in attendance. The first building was located at the corner of East Main and Pin Oak streets (across from Eastside Elementary School) and consisted of a small sanctuary, seven Sunday School rooms, restrooms, and baptistry.

As the young congregation experienced growth, more space was needed for Sunday School. So, in April of 1976, a decision was made to begin construction on an addition to provide a fellowship hall, kitchen, additional restrooms, a nursery, and six more Sunday School rooms. The addition was completed in the Spring of 1978

Bro. Cunningham built houses in the area as well as pastoring the church. As the demands of the congregation grew, Bro. Cunningham recommended in June of 1978 that a full time missionary-pastor be called.

Bro. Logan B.C. Hutson, then pastor of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church of Humnoke, was called to take over the leadership of the church. Bro. Hutson and his family moved to Cabot the last of July 1978 and assumed his pastoral duties in August of 1978.

The church continued to grow and soon needed additional space. In January of 1980, the church moved into her new addition including a larger sanctuary and additional classroom space. On January 13, 1980, the church dedicated the new building and had official organizational services. The total membership of the church was 81.

In January of 1991, Bro. Hutson tendered his resignation to the church. His years of compassionate leadership saw growth in the church spiritually and numerically. Bro. Hutson and his wife Mary continue to be an integral part of Faith Church.

In March of 1991, the church called Brent Summerhill as pastor. Bro. Summerhill was born and raised in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and was saved, baptized, and surrendered to preach at the Cavanaugh Baptist Church. He attended the Missionary Baptist Seminary in Little Rock, earning a Bachelors and Masters degrees in Bible Languages. He was serving as Assistant Pastor at Victory Baptist Church in Sherwood, Arkansas at the time of his call to Cabot. In April of 1991, Bro. Summerhill, his wife Cindy, and their then one year old daughter, Lauren, became a part of the family at Faith. Their son, Hayden, was born in December of 1992.

As the church continued to grow, space for worship, Sunday School, and parking grew less and less. After looking at the building options available on the Pin Oak site and the option of relocation, the church was yet undecided as to which direction to go, but decided in May of 1995 to seek out land which could be purchased to keep options open. In June of 1995, the church voted to purchase the 12.5 acres on Bill Foster Memorial Highway where the church is now located.

In February of 1997, the church voted to go ahead with relocation to the new property. The church also approved a Building By Faith Planning Committee (BBFPC) to oversee the process. In May of 1997, the church approved the BBFPC recommendations to institute a pledge drive for the building program, place the Pin Oak facilities for sale by owner, and proceed with prep work on the new property.

In April of 1998, the church approved the listing of the facilities with a local real estate company. Bible Baptist Church of Jacksonville expressed interest in the buildings and eventually both churches agreed to a contract that included sharing the facility for several months with Faith vacating the facilities fully on March 1, 2000.

During this transition period, the church rented office space on Plaza Boulevard and then, after vacating the Pin Oak facility, met for Sunday worship at Cabot Junior High North. This time of transition proved to be very fruitful for the church. Rather than holding its own, the church grew both in membership and in fellowship.

During this time frame, the church also increased its mission involvement, voting to co-endorse the work of Bro. Gary Bowers with the First Baptist Church in Littlestown, Pennsylvania. Through the building process in Cabot, the church assisted in the building of a new facility for the work in Pennsylvania. The church continues to co-endorse this ministry.

In March of 2001, the church moved into the new facilities on Bill Foster. The building was dedicated March 18. Growth continued requiring that unfinished space be made ready for classrooms immediately and the unfinished balcony be made ready for worship. Since in the new facility, the church has continued to see additions and increasing attendance.

While the history of a church is often told by its buildings and budgets, the truth is that the history of Faith is not merely about brick and dollar signs. The history of Faith is mostly about the hand of God at work in, among, and through a people surrendered to Him. What has been accomplished at Faith is His accomplishment. And the accomplishments that matter aren’t told in financial statements nor building reports, but in lives changed, sinners saved, families strengthened, broken lives mended. This is what Faith Church is about.
